The final weeks leading up to graduating from Dental School are often exciting, but fraught with stress and anxiety. Board Exams. Clinicals. Applications for post-graduate work. Licensing exams. Applications for residency. Job applications. Student loans. Applying for malpractice insurance.
In most cases, the professional liability exposure associated with taking board exams is covered by the school or facility where the exams are held. However this is not always the case, and it is possible to purchase board exam malpractice insurance for yourself. Be sure to find out at least a month before you take your exams.
When should I get malpractice insurance?
Your first malpractice insurance policy can be written at the time of your board exams, in order to cover them, or when you take your first active dental position following graduation. This is a vital step in protecting yourself, your future professional reputation, and your personal assets.
What exactly is “malpractice”?
Each state has its own definition of dental malpractice, however they are all fairly similar. The most common general definition of malpractice is “failure on the part of a dentist to exercise the degree of care, diligence and skill ordinarily exercised by dentists in good standing in the community in which he or she practices. As used in this section, “community” means the entire area customarily served by dentists among whom a patient may reasonably choose, not merely the particular area inhabited by the patients of that individual dentist or the particular city or place where the dentist has an office.” Other definitions include more specific language including “negligence when performing dental work, misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose a condition, failure to treat a condition, or misconduct of any kind from the dentist or oral surgeon.”
